William Sidney Mount, The Banjo Player, 1856
The American Voice in Music, with Professor Ann Sears
As we celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States in 2026, we will hear music across all genres that we recognize as quintessentially American in character, such as Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, or Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. This course will examine how that distinctive American character in music evolved, what musical traditions contributed to it, and why that voice is now so important to musical cultures around the world.
